I am not a Muslim in the usual sense, though I hope I am a “Muslim” as “one surrendered to God”; but I believe that embedded in the Qur’an and other expressions of the Islamic vision are vast stores of divine truth from which I and other occidentals have still much to learn.

"إذا كانت عظمة التصميم، وصغر الوسائل، وضخامة النتيجة هي المقاييس الثلاثة لعبقرية الإنسان، فمن يجرؤ أن يقارن إنسانيًا رجلاً عظيمًا في التاريخ الحديث بمحمد؟"

Si la grandeur du dessein, la petitesse des moyens, l'immensité du résultat sont les trois mesures du génie de l'homme, qui osera comparer humainement un grand homme de l'histoire moderne à Mahomet?

"كان محمد من هؤلاء الرجال النادرين الذين يستمتعون حقًا بصحبة النساء. وقد اندهش بعض أصحابه الذكور من تساهله مع زوجاته وطريقتهن في الوقوف أمامه والرد عليه. كان محمد يساعد بدقة في الأعمال المنزلية، ويصلح ملابسه بنفسه، ويسعى إلى صحبة زوجاته."

Muhammad was one of those rare men who truly enjoy the company of women. Some of his male companions were astonished by his leniency towards his wives and the way they stood up to him and answered him back. Muhammad scrupulously helped with the chores, mended his own clothes and sought out the companionship of his wives.

"بعيدًا عن كونه أبا الجهاد، كان محمد صانع سلام، خاطر بحياته وكاد أن يفقد ولاء أقرب رفاقه لأنه كان مصممًا على تحقيق مصالحة مع مكة."

Far from being the father of jihad, Mohammad was a peacemaker, who risked his life and nearly lost the loyalty of his closest companions because he was determined to effect a reconciliation with Mecca.
