In February 2026, over 160 scientists from 70 institutions worldwide published the most detailed map ever of the Milky Way's center. The team used Chile's ALMA telescope to survey a region spanning 650 light-years around the central black hole, revealing turbulent gas clouds and unprecedented structures. The mapped region contains 80 percent of the galaxy's dense gas and is the hottest and most chaotic zone in the Milky Way. This achievement within the ACES project opens a new window into understanding the formation of the first stars after the Big Bang, though analyzing the details may take years. What's been revealed resembles a chaotic scene that could rewrite our understanding of the early universe's origins and stellar deaths.
